Profile: Kate Middleton [Part One]
Born: January 9, 1982 in Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading
Father: Michael Francis Middleton (b. 1949 in Yorkshire)
Mother: Carole Elizabeth Goldsmith (b. 1955 in Middlesex)
Catherine Middleton, dubbed "Kate" by the media after her relationship with Prince William became public, is the first child of Michael, an airline pilot, and Carole, a flight attendant. She has two siblings, Philippa ("Pippa") and James. The Middleton family was firmly middle class when she was born, but after their party-supply company, Party Pieces, became successful, they were able to afford a wealthier lifestyle and a private education for their three children. They also bought a farm and a large house near Bucklebury in Berkshire.
She was, by all accounts, a quiet and conservative girl at Marlborough, even in dress. The Daily Mail quoted a classmate of Kate's, Gemma Wilkinson, on her teenage style: "Kate never wore particularly fashionable or revealing clothes - just jeans and jumpers with discreet pearl earrings and lots of bangles ... most of the girls at school would dress quite tartily to attract the boys, but not Kate. She couldn't have been less obvious - she hardly even wore any make-up."
Kate was a good student and a good athlete at Marlborough, but the Telegraph does report one small vice: mooning. Classmate Jessica Hay told the newspaper that "the teenage Kate used to 'moon' (bare her bottom) out of her dormitory window." It's still the closest thing to a scandal
that papers have managed to unearth about Kate's early life. Schoolmate Charlie Leslie told the BBC that "Kate is an absolutely phenomenal girl - really popular, talented, creative and sporty," and a college master remembered her as "an A-grade pupil across the board."
After graduating, Kate moved on to the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Though most say that Kate's decision was unaffected by the public announcement that Prince William would attend there, it is still not clear if she applied before or after his decision was publicized. She and William were assigned to the same residence hall, St Salvator's, and started out in the same course of study, art history. Kate began a romance with Rupert Finch, though she became such close friends with William that they shared a house during their second year with two other students.
